Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski will have fourth surgery on forearm next week

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will have surgery next week to replace a plate in his left forearm, Albert Breer and Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network report.

Gronkowsk broke his forearm while blocking on a fourth-quarter extra point attempt in a 59-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 18. Gronkowski underwent surgery to repair that break and would miss five regular season games. Gronkowski broke the same forearm again during a divisional playoff win over the Houston Texans and had surgery in mid-January.

A third procedure took place in February after Gronkowski developed an infection following the second surgery. A fourth procedure to replace the plate in Gronkowski’s forearm has been delayed by that infection, which has been treated with a round of antibiotics.

According to report, Gronkowski’s forearm will be examined on Monday to determine if the infection has cleared. If it has, Dr. Jesse Jupiter will perform the operation sometime next week at Mass General Hospital in Boston. Gronkowski appears to be in good hands as Dr. Jupiter’s bio at the Mass General website states that he “specializes in the care of traumatic and reconstructive problems of the upper limb. These include arthritis, fracture healing and failure to heal, nerve compression and injury, and both pediatric and adult injuries to the upper limb”.

Previous reports have Gronkowski needing 11 weeks to recover from a fourth surgery. If the infection has cleared, and the fourth surgery does the trick, Gronkowski would be on schedule to return early in training camp and should be available for the start of the regular season. As Rapoport notes, if the infection has not cleared a fifth procedure, in July, is a possibility, which would jeopardize Gronkowski’s availability for the start of the regular season.

Former Lions WR Young Arrested For Third Time In A Week

For the third time in a week, former Lions wide receiver Titus Young is in trouble with the law, Josh Katzenstein of the Detroit News reports.

Young was arrested around 11:30 p.m. Friday in San Clemente, Calif. after police say he broke into a home on the 3700 block of Calle Casino, according to Lt. Joe Balicki of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

When officers arrived at the home, Young fled on foot, and after a brief pursuit, he fought with the officers, Balicki said Sunday.

“There was a brief struggle,” he said. “He wanted to fight with the deputies. They ended up subduing him.”

Young has been charged with burglary, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. As of 1 p.m. Sunday, he was still in custody with bail set at $ 75,000.

Neither Young nor the officers were injured in the struggle, Balicki said.

Young also was arrested twice in a span of less than 15 hours last Sunday in Moreno Valley, Calif. After police say he made an illegal left turn into oncoming traffic at 12:01 a.m., he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

At 2:22 p.m. the same day, Young was charged with burglary after he was seen jumping the fence of an impound lot to look for his black Ford Mustang, police said.

Former Lions receiver Titus Young arrested for the third time in a week after break-in

Former NFL receiver Titus Young has squandered his talent — that much is for sure. And at this point, a future in the NFL is least of his worries.

Young, who was released by the Detroit Lions in February after a number of on-field and off-field incidents, was arrested on Friday and charged with burglary, assaulting a police officer, and resisting arrest. This happened after Young was reportedly seen breaking into a San Clemente, Calif. home. When officers arrived Friday night, Lt. Joe Balicki of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department told the Detroit News, Young fled on foot and fought with police after he was pursued for a short time. There were no injuries in the fracas. He is being held on $ 75,000 bail.

“He actually tried to fight with them,” Balicki told the Detroit Free Press. “But there were more deputies than him so they were able to subdue him without — I guess there were some punches thrown, but they were able to get him into handcuffs without too much damage.”

On Sunday, May 5, Young was arrested twice in a 15-hour span in Southern California:

He was pulled over at 12:01 a.m. by the Moreno Valley police in Southern California for suspicion of drunk driving, and subsequently arrested for driving under the influence. He was booked at a local detention center, was issued a citation, and was released from custody.

Ah, but we’re not done yet. At 2:22 p.m. that very same day, police responded to a tow yard, where Young had been seen jumping over the fence. He was trying to find his black Mustang, which had been impounded upon his first arrest of the day. Young was taken to the same detention center and booked for trying to steal his own car.

Young’s car was towed again before the Friday break-in.

Selected in the second round out of Boise State by the Lions in the 2011 NFL Draft, was cut by the team after a string of strange behavior that included sucker-punching teammate Louis Delmas, refusing to run the correct routes on the field, and blitzing everyone in sight in a series of bizarre and paranoid social media rants. The St. Louis Rams tried to see if he was worth rehabilitating after Detroit gave up on him, but that didn’t last too long, either.

“Based on the last time I did see him, I knew unless he got some help there was going to be some issues, and I told him that, too,” E.C. Robinson, Young’s high-school coach, told the Free Press last week. “And I thought maybe since I hadn’t heard anything from him, he was in some institute getting some help. That’s what I just figured. But I know the last time I saw him, I was just shocked the stage he was in at that time.”

Young needs a lot of help (or some time away from general society), and he needs it very, very soon. Stories like this don’t generally get better — they tend to end in tragedy.

Tablet deal of the year? (Click image to enlarge).

(Credit: Screenshot by David Carnoy/CNET)

This tablet deal may be hard to beat. After adding the Google Play store to its tablets on Friday, Barnes & Noble is now offering major discounts on the Nook HD and Nook HD+ in a one-week-only sale for Mother’s Day.

Today through May 12 (yes, that’s Mother’s Day), the 7-inch Nook HD is available starting at $ 149 for the entry-level 8GB model (normally $ 199) and the 9-inch NOOK HD+ starts at a mere $ 179 for the 16GB model (normally $ 269). The reduced prices are available online at Barnes & Noble bookstores and on nook.com, as well at at retailers including Target and Best Buy.

I suspect that those retailers and Barnes & Noble were sitting on a lot of inventory. However, these prices should help alleviate that problem.

There hasn’t been any chatter about Barnes & Noble a… [Read more]

Jesse Williams’ draft week free-fall could lead to another low-pick steal for Seahawks

RENTON, Wash. — Every draft has its mystery players — those guys who, for some unknown or fully explained reason — bottom out several rounds below their commonly accepted grade. One of those players in the 2013 NFL draft has to be Alabama defensive tackle Jesse Williams, who free-fell out of the first two days of the selection process, and found himself taken by the Seattle Seahawks with the 137th overall pick in the fifth round. That’s a pretty precipitous fall for a guy who was projected by many as a first- or second-round talent — a mainstay on a defense that led the way to two straight national championships. The Brisbane, Australia native is relatively new to the game, but the attributes that had us listing him at 35th overall on the Shutdown 50 were clear.

What was more nebulous was the condition of the knee he injured in the SEC Championship game against Georgia last Dec. 1. Williams proved his toughness by returning for the Crimson Tide’s BCS Championship victory over Notre Dame, but he missed the scouting combine drills as he was recovering. However, at Alabama’s pro day in March, Williams posted 40-yard dash times in the 4.84/4.92 range after missing the 40 at the combine due to a knee injury. Perhaps more importantly, he timed at 7.69 seconds in the three-cone drill, which would have ranked higher than some of the lighter defensive linemen at the scouting combine last month.

Apparently, that wasn’t enough for many NFL front offices. Sources have told Shutdown Corner that while some teams were seriously concerned about the long-term viability of Williams’ knee — the word “arthritic” apparently came up in discussions — other game him a relatively clean bill of health. Beyond that, as round after round went past and no team took a gamble, it very well could be that Williams found himself in a nightmarish Catch-22. Those teams with interest, but legitimately wondering about his knee in the long term, may have backed away because he was still on the board.

In the end, Williams was a more-than-acceptable “risk” in the fifth round for Seahawks general manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll, who are very aware of Williams’ potential if he can retain full health.

“He’s had work done in the past, but we understand what the situation is, just like our other guys that we deal with, but he should be all right, and we’re expecting him to be full speed,” Carroll said on Saturday. “He worked out at his workout in Alabama, and he’s ready to go.”

For Schneider, who runs the Seahawks’ draft board, it was a no-brainer. Seattle made a trade with the Detroit Lions to move up a few ticks in the fifth round, and away they went.

“For us, he was sitting alone on our board,” Schneider said. “Every year you have those guys that are supposed to go early, and they fall for different reasons and every team has to be accounted for where they take players at specific spots throughout the whole draft.”

Carroll, who wants defensive players able to fill multiple roles, had an immediate idea where Williams could fit in.

“We like him to play 3-technique,” Carroll said. “He played 3-technique and 5-technique more so last year, he played more on the nose this year, so he does have great versatility. We’re hoping that the mode we’ve been in with the big guys that he’s going to be really stout at the line of scrimmage at the 3-technique spot. The combination of guys that we can move through there now gives us a lot of flexibility. He is more like the big guys we’ve played with in the last couple of years, and so we think that gives us another new spot to fill with him. We think that he’ll play a lot of first and second down, and we’ll see how he pushes the pocket on third down, but right now that would be a great role for him to fill.”

Williams was nonplussed by his fall, and brought another theory to the table — in a draft class stacked with high-quality defensive tackles, he had a feeling he was going to slide.

“I knew I wasn’t a solid first round pick,” he told the media by phone after he was picked. “I knew I was going to have to wait a little bit, and I waited a little longer than I expected, but I’m just happy to be with a good association and go to a good team and be in a place where I can help contribute to the Seahawks … I was hoping to maybe sneak in to the second round. I had high hopes, but I was also being realistic. Like I said, I’m happy to wait as long as I needed to get to a good team, and somewhere I can contribute and help out right away.”

The Seahawks, who grabbed their franchise quarterback (Russell Wilson), All-Pro lead cornerback (Richard Sherman), and high-ticket strong safety (Kam Chancellor) in the third round or later under Schneider and Carroll, may well have another epic draft bargain on their hands.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: algae-powered building, ionic wind thrusters and 3D-textured solar cells

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green TKTKTK

This week, Inhabitat reported that the world’s first algae-powered building officially opened its doors in Hamburg. It’s called the BIQ House and it features an impressive bio-adaptive algae facade that controls day lighting while generating a steady stream of renewable energy. It makes sense that the self-sufficient building is located in Germany; the European country is leading the way in clean tech. Despite ditching its nuclear power plants, Germany has quadrupled its energy production in the past two years, largely due to its rapidly growing alternative energy portfolio. Not to be outdone, England just flipped the switch on the world’s largest wind farm, and in Paris, Schneider Electric set up kinetic energy-harvesting tiles that generate power from runners in the Paris Marathon. Meanwhile at the International Space Station, astronauts are installing a new type of 3D-textured solar cell that will soak up 16 sunrises every day.
