Apple issues Leopard update with Flashback removal tool

Folks still rocking Apple’s Leopard may have been feeling left out after Lion and Snow Leopard both got an update for addressing that Flashback malware. If you’re one of them, you’ll be glad to know that Apple has finally issued a Leopard fix that comes with a removal tool for the virus afflicting Apple’s big cats. In addition to a 1.23MB Flashback update, Apple also released a second 1.11MB fix for Leopard that disables versions of Adobe Flash Player that don’t have the requisite security updates. Both should further whittle down the number of Apple computers affected by the Flashback trojan. For the actual updates, feel free to pounce on the source links below.

Tom Brady hair update: He has a fauxhawk

From the follicles that brought you the Justin Bieber battle, the Carnival ponytail and the bald-spot cover-up comes …

… the side hawk.

Tom Brady showed off his umpteenth hairstyle at a gala Monday night at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. It features shaved sides, a punked-up front, a Dennis the Menace cowlick and more hair spray than is used in an actual production of “Hairspray.”

Tom Brady’s in the “I’m Tom Brady, I’m going to do whatever I want” phase of his life. Only instead of going to play baseball (Michael Jordan) or converting to Christianity (Bob Dylan) or dating Kim Kardashian (Kanye West, et al.), he’s sporting unconventional hairstyles that wouldn’t look out of place at Senor Frogs during Beach Week.

But don’t make fun. This is obviously Gisele’s doing (she didn’t want him to cut his Beiber-hair, if you recall) and, what, you’re going to argue with Gisele? Brady sporting a new hairstyle is equivalent to your spouse telling you to change your sweatpants before going to the grocery store.

With great supermodel wives come great supermodel makeovers. She’s not going to let Brady sport the same haircut for multiple seasons. That’s what commoners like Bill Belichick do. Gisele goes through a dozen looks in one fashion shoot! Tom can switch up the hair every few months.

Or every few weeks. Whatever she wants.

Apple is pushing out a new iOS update, 5.1.1. The new update is said to contain minor bug fixes and improvements, and is currently rolling out via iTunes as well as the Software Update/Over the Air function for iOS devices. The changelog lists several changes, including a HDR bug fix, 2G/3G issue for the new iPad, AirPlay fixes, and a purchase issue on the App Store.

The full details for iOS 5.1.1 as listed in the changelog are as follows:

  • Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut
  • Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks
  • Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances
  • Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List
  • Fixes an issue where “Unable to purchase” alert could be displayed after successful purchase

Our iPhone 4S is currently running 5.0.1, so the update is around 189MB, but for those running 5.1 the update comes in at around 55MB. The update is rolling out right now, so go ahead and grab it. If you’re trying to retain a jailbreak, we recommend you hold off for now until the Dev Team recommends otherwise.

Google MapsGL update adds parallax perspective, improves virtual tourism

Google’s been spending some quality time with its Maps offering of late. Most recently, it overhauled the 3D buildings and landmarks to make them, well, better. This time, its Maps’ juiced up sibling MapsGL that’s been feeling the paternal love. The WebGL-based 3D renderings have been given parallax perspective, making your virtual aerial tours all the more realistic. As you glide over the landscape, your view of the building changes accordingly, more like in real life. Or you could just take the lazy tourism one step further. Hit the source for examples.

Now that the 3DS has a healthy selection of varied apps and games for users to download, Nintendo will be doling out a software update for the system that will in part give 3DS owners a more organized way to keep track of all the content they have on their system. So if you want to put all your apps in one folder and all your games in another folder, you’ll soon be able to do that.

Or if you want to go even more granular, splitting up your games by genre, or create a “Favorites” folder, or however you want to splice it up. Each folder will have the capacity to store 60 apps or games, so you probably won’t have to worry about over-stuffing a folder. It’s nice to see Nintendo taking advantage of the 3DS’s architecture, which makes firmware patches like this much easier to accommodate than was possible on the Wii or DSi.

In addition to the addition of folders, the impending update will also send a Mario Kart 7 patch to all 3DS owners, whether or not they actually have the game. For those that do, it will fix a “glitch” in the Maka Wuhu course that allowed players to take advantage of a huge unintended shortcut, which has really messed up online competitions within the game. Those who try to play the game online without downloading the patch will be blocked. The update is reportedly set to be pushed to 3DS servers on April 25.

PS Vita gets (another) firmware update, free-to-play Montezuma Blitz available now

It’s been barely a week since the last one, but Sony’s now begun rolling out firmware version 1.67. It’s another meaty download, weighing in at just under 100MB, although there’s no detail on what it changes — we’re still exploring the update. Following the refresh, you can also pick up the PS Vita’s latest free game, Montezuma Blitz, a Bejewelled-style puzzle game. However, it’s not the first game to be offered up free on the Vita and some pesky in-game purchases taint that freebie status a little. Both the update and game are available to download on your Vita now.

After months, the patch that will finally fix the game-crippling lag glitch on the PS3 version of Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls: Skyrim has gone live. The new patch, which pushes the game to version 1.5, was released on both Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, and adds a whole bunch of functionality, but it is PS3 players who stand to gain the most from the update. They have been faced with problems from day one.

Bethesda admitted it knew the PS3 could be a problem before the game even launched, but it figured it would be able to eventually patch the title later, so it released the game anyway. Well, that time has finally come. The problem is that as players delved further into the adventure, their save files became unwieldy and caused the game to have extreme lag. The 1.4 update addressed that issue to some extent, but Bethesda still conceded that it wasn’t perfect.

The 1.5 update went live on PC last week, because there is much less red tape if you want to push a download file on a computer than if you want to do the same on a console. Bethesda had to go through the typical Microsoft and Sony hoops for the console version. Nevertheless, it’s finally out now, and players on all platforms are happy. From here on, game updates will be focused on enhancements rather than bug fixes.

The Nexus S 4G is now officially primed for the latest version of Android, after some trying times left users wondering exactly when the update would happen. Users can check if their phone is eligible for an upgrade by going to the “About Phone” section in the Settings menu. Even if you don’t check, though, eventually the update notification will pop up on your screen automatically.

When the Nexus S ICS update was first being pushed through last December, Google had to quickly yank it after numerous reports of users whose phones starting freezing and crashing. But then it fixed the bugs and starting rolling out updates yet again, but only to those with 3G versions of the Nexus S. Those with the Nexus S 4G were left behind. The update was leaked online earlier this week.

Around 3% of all active Android devices are running version 4.0 or later, while manufacturers are forced to be conservative about when they expect to get their devices updated. Several other manufacturers have pledged support for the new update, and a bunch of phones currently running an older version of Android will be eligible to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich beginning in the coming months.
