Despite concessions to desktop users, Windows 8.1 will be tailored to tablets

Microsoft Windows 8.1 Tablets Analysis
Yes, Windows users will get some variation of the Start button back with Windows 8.1, but that doesn’t mean Microsoft’s big update to Windows 8 will be catered more toward traditional desktop users. ZDNet’s Ed Bott has a sharp piece of analysis explaining why the most important features to Windows 8.1 will be geared toward making the operating system run better on tablets than on non-touch PCs. In particular, Bott notes that Microsoft has eased up its display resolution guidelines with Windows 8.1 to pave the way for smaller tablets that can nonetheless be used like traditional PCs with full access to Microsoft Office.

Computex 2013 wrapup Windows 8, tablets, Haswell, highres displays, earthquakes and more!

This year’s Computex certainly didn’t come and go quietly. From a 6.5-magnitude earthquake shortly after landing in Taipei to tons of tablets, smartphones, Haswell systems and more peripherals than you can shake a Taiwan dollar at, this has been one whirlwind week of hot and humid adventure. Unlike other shows abroad, this country’s massive computer exhibition is only growing in importance, as more manufacturers from both East and West choose to announce products and services here in the Republic of China.

The week was filled with unveilings both revolutionary and evolutionary — from quirky to crucial, there was a lot to take in. You’ll find many of our show picks at our Computex 2013 event page; there are dozens upon dozens of articles, hands-on videos and photo galleries to sift through, so set aside some time over the weekend and dig on in. We’ve also rounded up links to each and every related post after the break — click on through for all that and more.

SoftKinetic and TabletKiosk collaborate on 3D interface for tablets

SoftKinetic adds integrated 3D interface to TabletKiosk tablets

Perhaps in light of Intel’s goal of integrating 3D cameras into its devices by the end of 2014, SoftKinetic has partnered with TabletKiosk to bring what it calls the first-ever 3D interface to enterprise tablets. That chunky slab you see above is based on the Sahara Slate PC i500, but with the SoftKinetic DepthSense 3D camera set inside its lower bezel. As seen in our earlier hands-on with 3D-integrated laptops, the little cam can recognize faces and gestures from as close as 15 centimeters away thanks to a Time-of-Flight (ToF) depth sensor, so there’s no need for lots of room. Of course, this is just a prototype, and we’ll likely only see this in business implementations in the near future. That’s a good thing, though, as it looks like it belongs more in a shopping mall than on your kitchen counter. For more on the device, have a peek at the press release after the break.

Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote to ship free with Windows 8 tablets

Microsoft TKTK

During today’s Computex keynote, Microsoft Windows chief Tami Reller just announced that new x86 Windows 8 tablets will include Office in the box. The executive didn’t detail the software offering, beyond mentioning that Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote will all be included. We’re not quite sure whether there will be any software limitations, however, as we saw with the Windows RT bundle last year.

Qualcomm partners with Microsoft to power quad-core Windows RT 8.1 tablets

Toshiba unveils Tegra 4-based Excite Android tablets

Toshiba has announced a variety of new products, among them being three new Excite tablets offering Tegra 4 processors and high-resolution displays. The slates are all set to be available online the end of this month, and will hit major retailer shelves in July. We’ve got a gallery, as well as the specs, after the jump.

The three new tablets are comprised of the Excite Pure, Excite Pro, and Excite Write. All three of them are adorned with 10.1-inch displays, two of which (Excite Pro and Excite Write) are Toshiba’s PixelPure 2560 x 1600 Retina-competitors. Likewise, all of them run Android Jelly Bean 4.2, and feature respectively a touchscreen digitizer (Excite Write), Harman Kardon speaker, and, best of all, NVIDIA Tegra 4 processors.

Speaking of the Excite Write specifically, the addition of a touchscreen digitizer aims it at digital artists and others who require a more precise touch than the average tablet offers. Toshiba says the Write offers a “pen and paper experience,” which makes doing things like drawing and handwriting notes more natural and detailed. This tablet in particular comes with the TruNote app for note taking and organization, as well as the ThinkFree Office Mobile for Android app.

Said Toshiba’s VP of Marketing: “With more and more consumers adopting tablets as their go-to devices for entertainment and travel, we wanted to push the boundaries even further and equip our new Excite tablets with the technology and features needed to maximize the potential of these devices. By focusing on boosting the capabilities of the screen – from increasing the resolution to adding a digitizer option – we’re also evolving the way consumers can use these devices from consumption to creation.”

The Excite Pure is the cheapest of the bunch, starting at $ 299.99, featuring specifically 16GB of memory, 1GB of RAM, and a 3-megapixel camera. The Excite Pro is next at $ 499.99, offering twice the storage and RAM with an 8-megapixel camera. And the Excite Write rounds the three out at $ 599.99, with the same features as the Excite Pro, with the addition of the touchscreen digitizer.

They’ll hit ToshibaDirect.com on June 25, and elsewhere sometime early in July.

Microsoft said to cut prices for OEMs who push Windows RT on small tablets

Microsoft said to cut prices for OEMs who push Windows RT on small tablets

Acer has already managed to cram full Windows 8 into a $ 380 8-incher (shown above), but ARM-based Windows RT tablets have the potential to drive prices down even further — if only someone, somewhere would see their merit. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft is now trying to help things along by offering discounts to OEMs who’ll use RT in smaller tablets. The prices in question are confidential, so it’s hard to gauge the likely impact for consumers, but with Dell’s XPS 10 (shown above) still costing $ 400 with its dock, and with Surface RT fetching $ 500, there’s definitely scope for improvement.
