Listen to a real live mouse organ

We know mice are pretty actually pretty smart (as demonstrated by the trained rodents of MouseAgility), but are they smart enough to play music? Well, it depends on the instrument.

Duo Fabio Di Salvo and Bernardo Vercelli — or Quiet Ensemble — have created a “mouse organ” known as the Orchestra de Camera. Thankfully, it’s a little kinder than the Katzenklavier. To work, 40 mice are put in 40 mouse wheels, which are rigged up to music boxes. When the wheels go ’round, the handle turns and the music plays.

The great number of carillons and the random actions of the living creatures makes unrecognizable the melodies (lullabies by Brahms, Schubert, and Mozart), creating an unexpected musical carpet determined by the mice.

This is, of course, not the first time the experimental artists have used the random elements introduced by nature in their work. “Quintetto” translated the movements of fish in vertical tanks, filmed with a video camera, into digital sound signals, while “Orienta; è qui ora, che decido di fermarmi” followed the paths of 25 snails to create a unique light painting.

Ableton Push review: a dedicated controller for the Live faithful

DNP Ableton Push review a dedicated controller for the Live faithful

MIDI might be a little long in the tooth as protocols go, but it’s been the prevailing standard for getting music hardware and software to play nice pretty much since its inception. As such, the MIDI controller is a fairly established staple in professional and bedroom studios alike. The problem is they’re generic by nature. They come in all shapes and sizes, but to be profitable, they need to appeal to a broad range of applications. Ableton clearly didn’t think this arrangement was up to snuff, though, so it created Push — a software controller built entirely for its popular Live production software. While there have been Live-specific controllers before — some even officially endorsed by Ableton — Push is a whole new beast. It’s one that hopes to unite hardware and software in a way that an all-purpose controller never could.

Ableton also has lofty musical ambitions for Push: it claims it designed the hardware as an instrument in and of itself; something that lets you close the lid of the laptop and use to make music with, while not looking like you are checking your email. And, given that Ableton makes the software that it’s building Push for, integration is understandably expected to be airtight. But how well does it work? Is it an instrument? Will it replace all your other controllers? Do you want one? Is it worth the $ 599 pre-order price? Will it blend? We’ve pushed ourselves to explore the device fully in an effort to find out (apart from that last question, of course).

March Madness Live apps are free this year, stream all the games — if you have cable

March Madness Live apps are free this year, stream all the games if you have cable

This year’s version of the NCAA March Madness Live app is live in the iOS App Store (an Android version is scheduled to arrive on Google Play this weekend) and unlike last year the apps are free. Unfortunately there’s still a catch, since while the games aired on CBS will be streamed registration free via the web and apps, games on cable (TNT, TBS and TruTV) will require users to login with the account they use for their pay-TV provider.

The action gets started with the seedings on Selection Sunday, with the First Four games kicking off on the 19th. The March Madness apps are ready for smartphones and tablets on Android and iOS and “redesigned for optimization across platforms” this time around. Whether or not you have the privilege of membership (or can borrow a login from a friend) the apps are available beyond the source link.

Live from Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 unveiling

Samsung Galaxy S 4 Liveblog
People laughed when Samsung’s (005930) marketing boss said the company was planning to generate Apple-like buzz for future products. It has been a little over a year since Younghee Lee’s comments, and now it’s quite clear that Samsung kept its impossible promise. The Galaxy S 4 is one of the most highly anticipated devices of the year and it could go down as one of the biggest product launches of all time — which is why Samsung spared no expense and rented out Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Can the Galaxy S 4 possibly live up to expectations and help Samsung continue to flourish the smartphone market? Our live coverage of Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 press conference follows below.

Xbox Live Games on Demand sale starts today

Last week, we told you about a major sale coming our way this week, with over 60 Xbox 360 games being discounted all week long, with different sales every day. Larry Hyrb, head of Xbox Live, has announced that the sale has begun, and to start the week off, Microsoft is going big with heavy discounts to several Halo titles.

Halo 3, Halo: Reach, Halo Wars, and Halo 4 are all on sale today. The first three of which are discounted by 67% and are priced at just $ 9.99 each. Halo 4 is on sale for $ 39.99 — a 33% discount. Halo 4 is the newest game in the series and was released back in November. While a 33% discount isn’t quite as generous as a 67% discount, $ 40 for the game is still fairly good.

Furthermore, Hyrb also announced today that while most games will only see one-day sales, Microsoft is discounting a handful of selected games all week long, including BioShock, Tomb Raider Legend, several Tom Clancy titles, Call of Juarez, DiRT 2, GRID, and Rainbow Six Vegas. All of these games have discounts of no less than 75% off.

As for what the rest of the week looks like, Microsoft will be discounting a ton of AAA titles throughout the next week, including Assassin’s Creed, the Batman Arkham series, the Borderlands series, the entire Call of Duty series (except the first one), Dead Island, Fallout 3, Left for Dead 2, and Max Payne 3.

We’re live from MWC 2013 in Barcelona!

We're live from MWC 2013 in Barcelona!

We’ve arrived in Catalonia’s capital city, where snow, apparently, has marked the start of this year’s Mobile World Congress. That’s right, the hills surrounding this typically warm Mediterranean metropolis have been blanketed in a thin layer of flurries, but we’re nonetheless optimistic about this week’s smartphone show in Barcelona. As MWC 2013′s massive new venue begins to take shape, we’re preparing to deliver the hottest hands-ons, directly from Fira Gran Via. Some manufacturers, such as HTC and LG, have already demoed their latest handsets, and other devices have made an early debut, but there’s plenty of excitement still to come, as you’ll discover in our show preview. We’ll be sharing our liveblog lineup in a few hours — for now, it’s time to bookmark our event page, and check back often throughout the next week.
