Its official: Blizzard and Battle.NET have announced that Diablo III’s new Real-Money Auction House will be launching on the 29th of May. This comes after a bit of a delay in which the auction house was going to be launched on the 22nd of this month but was pushed back due to unforeseen circumstances. Due to the extremely volatile nature of a real-money set of exchanges here in the next-level auction house for Diablo III in-game items, Blizzard has let the world know that they’re sparing no expense making sure the launch goes smoothly.

This in-game online auction house is set to have users inserting real cash with credit cards and PayPal for which they receive currency which essentially work like game tokens at an arcade. This currency lives inside the auction house only and is not carried in-game by characters so as to keep the whole system as controlled as humanly possible. This system was created in reaction to player requests during Diablo II that the system of trading items back and forth between players be streamlined.

Have a look at what underground “Greatest Paladin in the World” gamer Athene has to say about the Real-Money Auction House to gain a greater understanding of what’s going on here – NSFW for a couple of swear words, btw:

Players from the age of Diablo II will remember hacks, duplication techniques, and evil in many forms when it came to trading items between players. In Diablo III no such evil shall exist, or so Blizzard hopes. The success of the Real-Money Auction House will rely heavily on how hardcore the players of the game become, of course. If Diablo II is any indication, Blizzard can expect playing and trading straight through the next 15 years when they release another installment – Diablo IV on the way!

One of the more far-reaching ramifications of America’s increasing concern with football safety is the increasing percentage of parents — including former NFL players — who would hesitate to let their sons play football. As we discussed in February, the fact that there could be millions of young men suffering from concussions at the sub-college level may erode the sport by providing a diminishing talent base as more potential young stars are driven to other sports by the inherent risks of the game.

Though the NFL has been reactionary at best on this subject, a new initiative put forth by the league, the Players’ Association, and other organizations provides a source of reason and hope. As the NFL Communications press release states:

The initiative will remove helmets that are 10 years old or older and replace them with new helmets at no cost to the beneficiary leagues and will provide coaches with the latest educational information to help keep their young athletes safer and healthier.

In its first year, the program is being piloted in four markets: the California Bay Area, Gulf Coast region, Northern Ohio, and the tri-state region around New York City.  The NFL, NFLPA, NCAA and NOCSAE have committed a combined total of approximately $1 million to the program in its first year. The pilot program is designed to provide valuable information on the state of youth football helmets, including the number of helmets 10 years old or older in use.  As of 2012, NAERA members will no longer recondition or recertify any helmet that is 10 years of age or older.  NOCSAE will collect the helmets when removed and use them for ongoing research programs.

The program, initiated by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Chairman Inez Tenenbaum, will educate thousands of coaches on concussion awareness, and distribute more than 13,000 helmets to low-income areas.

“The time has come to accelerate the culture change needed to improve the health and safety of youth football players,” Tenenbaum said.  “Even with our push for improved safety equipment, it is vital that parents, coaches and players understand that there is no such thing as a concussion-proof helmet.  The best answer is safer and smarter play, which is why this game-changing program is aimed at reducing hits to the head and trauma to the brain.  I want to thank everyone involved in this initiative for joining together in a common commitment to youth player safety.”

In addition to the NFL, NFLPA, and CDCPC, involvement comes from USA Football, the National Athletic Equipment Reconditioners Association, the NCAA, the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE), the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA), and equipment manufactures Rawlings, Riddell, Schutt, and Xenith.

“We are pleased to be part of this initiative, which will give children in underserved communities access to new helmets, and to reach coaches and parents with educational information to help protect young athletes from head injuries,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “This program is part of our focus on player safety at all levels of the game. We are proud to join with these well-respected organizations to make the Helmet Replacement Program a reality.”

As the press release states, helmets do not prevent concussions — but better helmets and better awareness can certainly help. In addition to the more advanced equipment provided, the Helmet Replacement Program will educate coaches on the following points:

– “Start with Safety”: Concussion awareness and response information, featuring links to CDC content and resources

– “Perfect Fitting”:  Helmet fitting information, including links to manufacturer-specific fitting resources

– “Tackle Safety”: USA Football’s Tackle Progression Model and Levels of Contact information and videos

– “Helmet Condition”: Reconditioning and replacement information

The Helmet Replacement Program is not a final solution, but it’s a good move forward on a subject that has been hidden and ignored for far too long.

Amazon Kindle Color eReader

Amazon will reportedly launch a new version of its Kindle eBook reader later this year that features a color display with a capacitive touch panel. Citing multiple unnamed sources within Amazon’s supply chain, Digitimes on Thursday reported that Amazon is currently beginning to place parts orders for the new Kindle, which will launch some time in the second half of 2012. The site also claims Amazon will likely make use of new color display panels from E Ink, and TPK Holding Company will supply the multi-touch panels. Digitimes reported in February that Amazon’s color eReader would launch as soon as March, however the company has yet to unveil any such product.

Wii U with Android tipped for launch

Today Nintendo‘s next gaming console Wii U has been tipped to be running Android applications right out of the box. This situation is not unfounded, as Android apps have been integrated into other systems, sort of, in the past, but this time it could be much more simple than what we’ve seen before. Where before we’ve seen systems such as BlackBerry attempt to integrate Android by making the process to port apps over to their system appear relatively easy, this time Nintendo may be building Android into their system, for real, to work right alongside their own user interface and software.

The original Wii also has the ability to run applications made by many multiple masses of developers from all directions. Apps such as Hulu and Netflix have been integrated officially while hackers have taken liberties with all sorts of oddball apps and features. Now the next generation Wii U may have an expanded universe on the box! What greatness could Nintendo possibly achieve with access to the Google Play environment?

If Nintendo does indeed join forces with Google, that would place them in a position to compete with both Sony and Microsoft where they’ve been failing – in some terms – for the past several years. Cloud storage integration, computing across uncounted devices, and mobile gaming not just here on the Wii U console, but on smartphones and tablets and more, oh my!

This tip comes from VG 24/7 where they’ve got an anonymous source speaking with them with the scoop. We’ve also come across some clues recently that would also lead us to believe that Nintendo is finally about to break out into the mobile gaming universe as well. Soon, we hope!

Sales of Apple’s popular iPhone line of smartphones will continue to decline until the next-generation model launches later this year according to one analyst. Mike Walkley of Canaccord Genuity on Thursday raised his price target on shares of Apple stock to $740, reiterating a Buy rating. Walkley believes that Apple will post strong results for the second fiscal quarter ended in March, however he lowered his EPS estimates for fiscal 2012 to $43.13 from $44.58. Read on for more.

“Our recent channel checks indicate modestly slowing iPhone 4S sell-through trends in developed markets,” Walkley wrote. “We have lowered near-term iPhone unit estimates, but we have increased our F2013 iPhone estimates as we anticipate very strong demand for an LTE iPhone 5 ramping during the December quarter. We maintain our belief Apple is well positioned for strong sales and earnings growth driven by new product introductions across its portfolio.”

Brian White of Topeka Capital Market believes Apple’s next-generation iPhone, which he and Walkley both refer to as the “iPhone 5,” will launch some time in the third calendar quarter, but Walkley’s note indicates a fourth-quarter launch and he sees iPhone demand ramping up at that time. BGR reported late last year that Apple plans to launch a completely redesigned iPhone some time this fall.

We have been informed by a trusted source that HTC’s One X, one of the best smartphones ever to come out of Taiwan, will be available on AT&T as early as this week. We have also been told that AT&T may announce availability details tomorrow, and that the handset’s release should follow within five to seven days of the carrier’s announcement. AT&T’s version of the HTC One X swaps out the quad-core Tegra 3 processor for a dual-core Snapdragon CPU in order to accommodate 4G LTE connectivity, but unlike the complete redesign we saw on Sprint’s EVO 4G LTE, the AT&T version should be nearly identical to the international model.

Canonical prepping to launch Ubuntu as smartphone OS?

Crawling the job posting boards over at Canonical turns up a pretty interesting position, one for a Business Development Manager (Ubuntu Phone OS). Now, we’re not quite ready to jump to any conclusions here, but the wording of the listing is quite intriguing. The group is looking for a “business development lead to engage and develop strong relationships with industry partners in the run up to the launch of Ubuntu as a smartphone operating system,” with the goal of “establish[ing] a commercial ecosystem around Ubuntu as a smartphone OS.” Does this mean that Ubuntu is preparing to take on Android and iOS in the battle for smartphone supremacy (or, more likely, take on Windows Phone in a competition of also rans)? Honestly, we’re not sure. The wording is quite vague, and it could simply be the company is referring to Ubuntu for Android. We’ve contacted Canonical for comment and we’ll update if we get any clarification.

[Thanks, Mo]

T-Mobile plans to release its flagship HTC One S smartphone in just over two weeks according to a recent report. Earlier rumors pointed to a launch on April 22nd, but a photo of a purported internal slide published Monday evening by TmoNews suggests the launch will take place a few days later on April 25th. HTC unveiled the One S at the annual Mobile World Congress trade show earlier this year. The sleek device features a 4.3-inch qHD Super LCD display, a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor, 16GB of internal storage plus 25GB of free cloud-based Dropbox storage for two years, the same amazing 8-megapixel camera as the one found on the One X, Sense 4.0 and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, all somehow packed within a unibody aluminum case that is just 7.9 millimeters thick. A photo of the purported slide follows below.
