Retina iPad mini leak points to upgraded processor and cameras

iPad mini 2 specs release date
Apple is expected to debut a new iPhone, iPad and iPad mini tablet later this year. Earlier rumors have suggested that the company’s popular 7.9-inch tablet would see a variety of improvements over the previous model. According to MobiLeaks, the second-generation iPad mini will be equipped with an improved Retina display with 2048 x 1536 resolution that works out to 324 pixels per inch, and it will feature Apple’s dual-core A6X processor as well. The device’s camera will reportedly be upgraded with an 8-megapixel sensor on the back and a 2-megapixel sensor on the front. The thickness of the next iPad mini is also said to be increasing from 7.2mm to 7.5mm, likely to make room for a larger battery. Apple is expected to release the second-generation iPad mini sometime this fall.

Google Glass is no iPad

Google Glass Analysis
The consumer electronics industry has gotten pretty boring lately. That’s not to say the new products that have debuted recently are boring, but we’re definitely in a period marked by iteration. Each new smartphone closely resembles the smartphone that came before it, each new tablet is a tweak and a spec bump away from its predecessor, and Windows 8 hasn’t reinvented the PC like we had hoped. The timing couldn’t have been better for Google to shake things up with Google Glass, the curious connected eyewear that will launch next year. But is Glass really the next big thing or are we all just so bored that anything seems like a breath of fresh air?

iPad is top selling tablet, but Android now most common tablet OS, says IDC

More tablets were shipped during January and March this year than the entire first half of 2012: 49.2 million units during the three-month period, according to IDC. The analyst firm’s Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker was published Wednesday and it shows that tablets continue grow at a rapid clip. Every major tablet maker saw large gains in shipments during the first quarter — and one of the notable results of that is that Apple’s overall share of the tablet market is decreasing.

Apple is still the world’s largest tablet seller; it shipped 19.5 million in the last quarter, up from 11.8 million the same quarter a year ago, according to IDC and its own numbers released earlier this month. That’s an increase of 64 percent. Its No. 1 mobile competitor, Samsung, saw its shipments grow even faster, from 2.3 million tablets a year ago to 8.8 million in the latest quarter. Rounding out the Top 5, Asus and Amazon also more than doubled their tablet shipments from a year ago. Microsoft, which did not start selling tablets until October 2012, shipped 900,000 Surface units between January and March.

The overall growth in tablets means Android is now the most popular mobile OS in tablets shipped during the quarter; a year ago it was on 8 million of tablets shipped worldwide, compared to the 11.8 million iPads. This past quarter saw Android shipped on 27.8 million tablets that were shipped and 19.5 million iPads and iPad minis.

All this does not mean doom and gloom for the iPad. Apple’s tablet sales continue at a rapid clip, increasing every quarter – faster than the iPhone right now. And while its overall share of tablet shipments may be slipping, it’s still selling more than double the number of tablets each quarter as its closest competitor, Samsung (see chart below).

One designer’s quest to make a better Netflix iPad app

How would Netflix’s iPad app look like if you scrapped everything and restarted from scratch? That’s exactly what Joel Grenier, director of UX for the Ottawa-based design agency YOU i Labs did.

“Now that I use Netflix every day and love the service on many levels, I find myself frustrated with the current state of the application experience and design,” he wrote in a blog post earlier this month. That’s why he came up with a very different approach.

Grenier’s prototype comes complete with a sign-in option for personalized profiles — which Netflix is set to roll out in the coming months — custom artwork for movies and TV show pages, the ability to drag and drop titles for custom watch lists and more. And everything is tied together with some very smooth animations.

Grenier even mocked up some second-screen functionality for the Netflix iPad app, allowing users to tweet about titles they’re currently watching and even buy things related to a movie or a show.

10_ScreensInDevice_SecondScreen

It’s unlikely that the Netflix iPad app would ever get such a radical overhaul — Netflix famously A/B-tests each and every potential new feature and only implements features that notably lead to higher engagement — and some features don’t actually make all that much sense. For example, one could argue that a pure on-demand service doesn’t really need a live Twitter stream, as the viewing experience is largely asynchronous.

But Grenier’s app mockup is nonetheless food for thought — and proof that there is still a lot media services can experiment with on mobile devices.

iPad mini reportedly accounted for 64% of all iPads shipped last quarter

iPad Mini Shipments
That chomping sound you hear is the iPad mini eating into the sales of its older sibling. Unnamed sources have told Digitimes that Apple shipped 12.5 million iPad minis last quarter that accounted for roughly 64% of all iPads shipped. The reported iPad mini shipment numbers would give Apple’s 8-inch tablet a significant edge over the rival Google Nexus 7 tablet, which Digitimes‘ sources say has totalled around 4.5 million units shipped since its launch last summer. Earlier rumors have indicated that Apple might be working on two newer versions of the iPad mini for fall release: A more expensive version with a full Retina display and a cheaper version that could be priced competitively with the Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire HD.

New ‘iPad 5′ rear shell photo points to upcoming redesign yet again

New 'iPad 5' rear shell photo points to upcoming redesign yet again

Apple’s fifth-generation iPad hasn’t yet been unveiled, but at this point we likely have a fairly good idea of what to expect. The new “iPad 5″ will be thinner and lighter than Apple’s current model — which seems like an obvious assumption unless you consider the fact that the third-generation iPad was both thicker and heavier than its predecessor — and it will seemingly have a smaller overall footprint as well. In line with a series of earlier leaks, a newly published photo from case maker Tactus allegedly shows the next-generation iPad’s rear shell. It also reinforces numerous earlier reports suggesting the iPad 5 will feature a big redesign that adopts the iPad mini’s design aesthetic. According to a recent report from KGI Securities, which has a solid track record when it comes to information about unannounced Apple devices, the next-generation iPad will launch this coming August or September.

Apple’s next iPad will be both thinner and lighter than its predecessor, bringing back the company’s old habit of iPad shrinkage.

That’s according to KGI Securities analyst Mingchi Kuo, who in a note to investors last night said to expect a full-sized iPad that’s 15 percent thinner than the fourth-generation iPad, and that weighs 25 percent less.

That size reduction is due to a handful of tweaks, Kuo says. That includes a battery that’s 25-30 percent smaller, and improvements in display panels and A-series chip technology, which now slurp up less juice. Apple will also use the same touch technology found on the iPad mini, which is thinner than what it currently uses on its full-sized iPads.

“Thinness and lighter are key attributes,” Kuo said in the note. “We think one of the reasons iPad 3 and iPad 4 didn’t sell as well as expected was they are both heavier and thicker than iPad 2.”

Apple, of course, released both of those models within seven months of one another. The move ticked off third-generation buyers, but likely kept people from holding off on purchasing third-generation units with the company’s obsolete 30-pin connector.

iPad mini shipments may drop by 30% in Q2 due to ‘lacking demand’

iPad mini shipments may drop by 30% in Q2 due to 'lacking demand'
More potential bad news for Apple investors on Wednesday: shipments of the iPad mini could drop by as much as 30% in the second quarter. According to unnamed supply chain sources speaking with Digitimes, Apple’s manufacturing partners will ship 20% to 30% fewer iPad minis this quarter than they did between January and March due to “lacking demand in the market.” According to the report, customers are waiting for the second-generation iPad mini with a Retina display to launch, and are therefore not interested in the first model, which was released just this past November. Digitimes states that Q2 iPad mini shipments are expected to fall to between 10 and 12 million units from about 15 million in the March quarter.
