Anonymous declares cyber war on Syria after country shuts down Internet

Anonymous has declared cyber war against the embattled Syrian government just one day after the country sparked outrage by shutting down its citizens’ Internet access. As Network World reports, Anonymous has vowed to attack “all Web assets belonging to the Assad regime that are NOT hosted in Syria” in retaliation for the country’s suppression of its citizens’ digital communications. Anonymous said that the Syrian government’s actions were particularly rash because it had “physically severed the fiber-optic and coaxial cables coming into Syria” which is “not damage that can be easily or quickly repaired.” The hacker collective said its first target will be a website belonging to Syria’s embassy in China.
Why I Don’t Like Cyber Mondays

Don’t be fooled. Sure, you can get good bargains on Cyber Monday. But you can also get them pretty much anytime this week as well, online or off.

Kindle Fire slashed to $129 in Cyber Monday promo
Amazon has trimmed the price of its Kindle Fire tablet for Cyber Monday, bringing the 7-inch ereader slate down to $ 129. Available on both the “Special Offers” subsidized model or – for $ 144 – the non-subsidized versoin without adverts, the discount means Amazon’s tablet temporarily undercuts Barnes & Noble’s NOOK HD and Google’s Nexus 7 by $ 70.

The particular Kindle Fire in the promotion is the updated entry-level model. That features a 1.2GHz processor and 1GB RAM, which Amazon claims makes it 40-percent faster than its predecessor, along with 8GB of storage and a battery good for up to 9hrs of reading, browsing, video playback, or other uses.
Under the hood there’s Android, though Amazon comprehensively reskins Google’s platform for its own purposes, and redirects all shopping through its own app and media stores. The Nexus 7 remains the better generic Android tablet choice, while the Kindle Fire HD has a better display.
Before you get visions of outfitting the whole family with a cheap Kindle Fire, however, Amazon has limited the promotion to a single unit per shopper. You’ll need to use the “FIREDEAL” coupon code when you check out in order to score the $ 129 slate.

Sonos deals for Cyber Monday and beyond

At CNET, we’ve long ranked the Sonos family of products near the top of our favorite wireless audio gear. The secret to the bulletproof wireless streaming of the Sonos — it operates free of dropouts — is that the audio streamers uses their own proprietary mesh wireless network, which is separate and distinct from your home’s Wi-Fi network. Up to 32 separate Sonos units can operate in your home, wirelessly communicating with one another — and without the constrictions of Wi-Fi.
But there’s one hitch: while the Sonos system is wireless, the first Sonos unit in your home needs to be hardwired to your network. (In that respect, it’s just like a cordless phone system, where the main phone base station needs to be connected to a walljack.) Sonos has a workaround in the form of the Sonos Bridge: the $ 49 Bridge plugs into an Ethernet jack, creating the initial wireless point to communicate with a Sonos music player, which can then be placed anywhere within the Bridge’s resulting wireless bubble.
Still, when you’re playing $ 300 to $ 500 for your first Sonos music player, spending an extra $ 49 can sting a bit. Thankfully, there are two deals th… [Read more]

This year, some retailers are so impatient to open their doors for Black Friday that they’re calling in employees to kick off the sales bonanza as early as 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. But why wait even that long? In fact, why even get off the couch when that tablet resting on your turkey and pie-filled belly has access to both your wallet and a whole universe of deals?
Digital ad agency Digitas told its hometown paper the Boston Globe this week that its recently commissioned survey (conducted by Harris Interactive) of consumers found that 28 percent plan to shop via a mobile device this Thursday.
That’s almost twice the amount of mobile shoppers that were seen last year on Black Friday, and more than five times the amount that got the jump on… [Read more]
