TNA Wrestling iMPACT for iPhone Review

Pro-wrestling games have been staples of my console gaming setups for as long as I can remember.  So far, though, mobile platforms haven’t been kind to the genre and TNA Wrestling iMPACT really doesn’t do much to change that situation.
There are plenty of good things here.  You get a cast well-rendered TNA superstars, including Samoa Joe, Hulk Hogan and AJ

Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3-iSSD

Gigabyte has decided to simplify matters for those who want the power of an SSD in their desktop, but don’t want to deal with the hassle of buying and connecting one. The company’s new Z68XP-UD3-iSSD (catchy, no?) motherboard comes with a 20GB Intel SSD 311 mounted right on it, which should sound somewhat familiar. It’s not clear if you can simply dump files on it like a normal drive — what it can do, however, is use Intel’s Smart Response tech to cache frequently accessed data, like your OS, to improve performance. Essentially, it turns any hard disk you connect to the system into a hybrid drive with a much larger reserve of flash storage. The board also features the ability to switch between discrete and built-in graphics thanks to Lucid Logix’s Virtu. The rest of the features are pretty standard fare: USB 3.0, a pair of 16x PCI-E slots, and 6GB SATA connections. The latest Z68 board from Gigabyte will go on sale early in June and, while we don’t have a price, we’ve done a little (PR) embedding of our own after the break.

Google and its poached Paypal employees got sued for trade secret misappropriation yesterday, but we didn’t know the dirty details until now. A peek at PayPal’s complaint reveals there’s a bit more to the story. Apparently, Paypal and Google were in talks last year to use PayPal for payments in the Android Market. Osama Bedier was in charge of those negotiations for PayPal in October of 2010, when the deal was supposed to close, but was allegedly interviewing for a mobile payment position at Google at the same time (holy conflict of interest, Batman!). The complaint claims that Bedier initially rebuffed El Goog’s advances, told PayPal of the job offer and professed that he would stay, but jumped ship a month later (bringing some PayPal coworkers with him) after being recruited by Stephanie Tilenius and the almighty dollar. Once it hired Osama, Google put the brakes on the PayPal deal and created Google Wallet. Then Google, Bedier, and Tilenius got slapped with a lawsuit. A brief rundown of the legal claims awaits you after the break.

The Mac malware threat posed by Mac Defender and its variants recently got worse, thanks to a new version called MacGuard that doesn’t require a user to input their administrator password during installation. But now there’s also evidence pointing to the source of the ongoing scareware threat, thanks to information security blogger Brian Krebs.

The Mac Defender scareware threat masquerades as an antivirus program by claiming your system is infected, then asking for payment to get rid of the reported infection. It’s a common tactic used by PC malware, but is relatively unseen on Apple computers. Krebs identified a link between Mac Defender (and its variants) and ChronoPay, Russia’s largest online payment processor. In a 2009 investigation while with The Washington Post , Krebs linked ChronoPay to rogue anti-virus operations like Mac Defender, and last year, tens of thousands of leaked documents revealed the company was very much involved in the trade.

Krebs found that mac-defence.com and macbookprotection.com were both associated with the contact address fc@mail-eye.com. The mail-eye.com domain is owned by ChronoPay, as are the virtual servers in Germany that run it, according to Krebs. Two new domains (appledefence.com and appleprodefence.com) related to Mac security that haven’t yet been used in Mac scareware threats are also registered using the fc@mail-eye.com address, according to information received by Krebs.

For its part, ChronoPay explained in an interview with Krebs that it basically bears no responsibility for the actions of its customers as a high-risk service provider. It sets up entire businesses, including paying for registration, and hosting telephone support, opening bank accounts, and handling transactions, but it’s actually the merchants who employ its services that are the ones responsible for any issues of legally or ethically questionable behavior. I contacted ChronoPay regarding the link between it and this round of Mac scareware, but have yet to receive a response.

Krebs says that while it’s possible Apple will have more influence than others when it comes to trying to convince ChronoPay to shut down the alleged rogue anti-virus side of its business, or at least cut off the clients that dabble in that trade, it still isn’t very likely to happen. Luckily, Apple is promising a fix to protect against the malware in the coming days, and has already posted steps users can take to remove it from their systems.

As always, the best defence against any kind of malware, Mac or otherwise, is due diligence on the part of users. Only download from trusted sources, research before you download anything, and never install something marketed based on scare tactics or if you’re unsure of its origins.

While Android Market is on pace to overtake Apple’s App Store  in overall apps later this year, it’s trailing far behind as a money-making platform for developers. New analysis from app research firm Distimo found the Android Market is still dominated by free app downloads, and that paid downloads do much better on the iOS platform.

The latest Distimo report found that just two paid Android apps have ever eclipsed the half-million milestone, while six iPhone apps did that in two months in April and May. In a comparison of paid game downloads, Distimo found there are five games in Google’s Android Market with over 250,000 downloads worldwide, while the Apple App Store for iPhone had 10 games that hit 250,000 downloads in the United States alone in two months. This isn’t that surprising because Apple’s App Store has about three times as many paid apps as Android.

Overall, 79.3 percent of all paid Android apps have been downloaded less than 100 times, and only 4.6 percent of paid apps were downloaded more than 1,000 times. Among free apps on Android, only 19.6 percent of apps have been downloaded less than 100 times, and 48.2 percent were downloaded more than 1,000 times. Android users appear more likely to download free apps, something we’ve noted previously.

Historically, only 69 Android free apps have been downloaded between 5 and 10 million times, and 27 apps have been downloaded more than 10 million times. Only one, Google Maps, has eclipsed the 50 million mark. This suggests than even among free apps, there are few outright successes.

One of the issues appears to be that there is less turnover in the top rankings for the Android market. In April, in the App Store for iPhone, there were 843 distinct applications in the top 300 free rankings, and 584 unique apps in the top 300 paid applications. For the Android Market, there were only 388 distinct applications in the top 300 free apps, and 363 apps that appeared in the top paid 300 paid apps in April. Among top-10 applications, there have been only 26 free and paid apps in the top 10 rankings for April in the Android Market, while 94 iPhone applications were in the top 10 free and paid in the App Store in April. That lack of change in the rankings can be hard on developers, who look to the charts as a way to get attention and free marketing.

Free apps can still be monetized through advertising, but that works best when you have a lot of downloads, as does Rovio’s Angry Birds, a level of success many developers don’t achieve. Or there’s the potential for in-app purchase revenue, something Google has addressed by recently turning on its in-app purchase payment system. Google has been taking steps to improve the overall Android Market experience with more charts and better curation. It has also been tinkering with its ranking algorithm to reward more engagement. As I recently reported, Android is still a popular place for developers, especially those looking to push boundaries, and it’s growing as the primary platform for some devs. And with Android device sales soaring, it makes sense for developers to target the platform. But it will take some more time before the platform becomes a real money-maker like Apple’s App Store.

Fusion Reactor

Normally, if a grown man talks about building a fusion reactor and wants your 13-year-old to hang out in his garage, we’d expect you to smile, back away slowly, and perhaps alert the authorities. But, if that man is Microsoft program manager Carl Greninger there’s no need to run. The science fanatic recruited a team of teens, as young as 13, and worked with them to build a Farnsworth-Hirsch Fusor — a (comparatively) simple nuclear reactor that smashes together atoms and produces neutrons. Check out the nearly 20-min video after the break to watch a bunch of high school kids generate ball of ionized plasma. And to think, all that’s in your garage is that ’65 Mustang you swear you’re gonna restore one day.

WatchESPN App Now iPad-Optimized

Less than two months after it first made live video streams of its cable channels available on mobile devices, ESPN’s popular live video app, WatchESPN, is now optimized for iPad viewing. The latest release of the app brings a bigger screen resolution and clearer video to sports fans that have the Apple tablet and also happen to be subscribers of select cable systems.

The WatchESPN  iPad app, like the iPhone app and the Android  app released before it, lets users watch live video streams from the programmer’s stable of sports networks. That includes access to cable channels ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, as well as its ESPN3 broadband video service, all in one place.

The catch is that the live streams are only available to subscribers of a couple of pay TV services right now. Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS and Brighthouse Networks subscribers that get ESPN as part of their cable packages will have access to the app, but everyone else will have to wait until their providers strike a new deal with the “Worldwide Leader in Sports.”

The release comes as cable programmers and pay TV operators are racing to make their content available on the iPad and other mobile devices. Time Warner Cable and Cablevision both released iPad apps that allow subscribers to watch live cable streams in their homes earlier this year.

But some programmers were unhappy with those apps, in part because they want to control how their content is viewed online and on connected devices. Apps like ESPN’s, which make live video streams of its channels to cable subscribers, is one way for cable networks to control distribution and their brand, by providing additional value to consumers outside the home.

Heads up: Actor Charlie Sheen appears to be making some big changes in his life and has just listed his long-time Sherman Oaks residence for $7.2 million, according to The Real Estalker.

While the world knows Mr. Sheen is now unemployed (Ashton Kutcher is set to take over Sheen’s role on the sitcom “Two and a Half Men”), a Forbes report shows Sheen racked up about $40 million over the past year, so it’s obvious that Sheen isn’t selling because he can’t afford the mortgage payment.

And Sheen already has a cash offer on the table! An online porn site has reportedly offered Sheen $4million for the house, and says it would fill it with porn stars, as Sheen once said he wanted to do.

Not only that, the former owner would be welcome to come over any time.

Sheen has owned his Sherman Oaks residence on Aubrey Road since 1997, buying it for $2.5 million. Just this past March, Sheen purchased a second home about nine houses away in the gated community of Mullholland Estates.  The second estate, which has a recorded sale price of  $6,999,999 (listed for $7.5 million) is just a few blocks away from the Sheen home that just went on the market.

The reported idea behind the purchase of the second McMansion, in addition to allegedly purchasing a few more properties in the neighborhood, was to give one to ex-wife Denise Richards and another to Brooke Mueller (Sheen’s soon-to-be ex-wife). Apparently his torpedo of truth exploded on that idea and Sheen has decided to list the Aubrey Road home he has owned for over a decade.

Sheen’s Sherman Oaks mansion is a custom-built Mediterranean estate with 5 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms and nearly 8,000-sq ft of living space. Other features include a private screening room, and a professional outdoor kitchen with dining area, pool, and spa.

No doubt that the world of Sherman Oaks real estate is on deck for some real estate crazy, but only time will tell what exactly it might be.
